Salem is the capital of Oregon and is one of the oldest cities in the west. Places to visit while there are the Capitol Building, the Mission Mill Museum, and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art which showcases art collected by Willamette University for over 100 years.

The Mission Mill Museum is on the site of the historic Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Here you can see a demonstration of how the mill was run using the water from Mill Creek. Several historic buildings have been moved to this location including:

  • The Jason Lee House built in 1841.
  • The John D Boon House built in 1847.
  • The Methodist Mission Parsonage built in 1841.
  • Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church built in 1858.

Silver Creek Falls is 26 miles east of Salem. Here you can see ten spectacular water falls during a seven-mile hike through the forest on well-maintained trails. There is also a 2.8 mile hike for those who don't feel up to the full seven miles.

Oregon Garden is just a 15-minute drive from Salem. It is an 80-acre botanical garden with a variety of plant species plus the only home in Oregon built by the famous architech, Frank Lloyd Wright.
