Oregon Christmas Events



Put these Oregon Christmas events on your calendar now. Some require advance tickets. Some are activities your children will enjoy and some are for adults.

Oregon Christmas Events--General

This year's Christmas Theme at Pittock Mansion is "A Fairy Tale Christmas". The mansion is decorated for Christmas from top to bottom--all 23 rooms. Bring the kids because Santa Claus will be there.

You can see the holiday decorations starting November 19th through December 31, 2007. The mansion will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.



To get to the mansion, drive west on W Burnside Street. Turn right onto NW Barnes Road. Turn right onto Nw Pittock Drive. The address is 3229 NW Pittock Drive, Portland.

Opening hours are 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Pittock Mansion will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Admission: $7-Adult, $6-Senior, $4-Child.



Pioneer Square hosts the Holiday Ale Festival November 29th, 30th and December 1st and 2nd. Thirty-six winter ales will be featured. Don't worry about the weather. A huge clear tent houses the event with gas heaters keeping the cold out. You will need to purchase a souvenir mug for $5. You can purchase script in $1 increments. One $1 script buys a taste. Four $1 scripts buys a full mug.



The Providence Festival of the Trees presents over 100 trees and wreaths in a festive village with live music, a Teddy Bear Hospital, and Santa's Workshop. This event at the Oregon Convention Center is on November 30th and December 1st.

Hours on Friday are 10 am to 9 pm. Hours on Saturday are 10 am to 6 pm. Admission: $5-adult, $4-senior, $3-child 3 to 12 years old.



One of the Christmas events with an international theme--enjoy the traditions of a Scandanavian Christmas at ScanFair at Portland State University, 3rd Floor, Smith Memorial Center (1825 SW Broadway). Saturday, December 1, 10 am to 5 pm; ScanFair Dance, December 1, 7:00 pm to 11 pm; Sunday, December 2, 11 am to 4 pm.

Tickets: $6-adult, $5-seniors and students, $3-child, children 5 and under free.


Oregon Christmas Events--Christmas Light Displays

Enjoy Winter Wonderland at PIR. Portland International Raceway will be decked out with two miles of Christmas Light Displays starting Thanksgiving Day and ending New Year's Day. You can enjoy the lights from the warmth of your car.

Entry fee: $15-car, $18-van with eight or more people.

Hours: Sunday through Thursday--5 pm to 10 pm. Friday and Saturday--5 pm to 11 pm.





The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Pioneer Courthouse Square on November 23rd at 5:30 pm. The 75-foot tree will be lit and there will be Christmas music by the Portland Jazz Orchestra.



The Queen Anne Victorian Mansion will be presenting its "Miracle of a Million Lights" starting November 23rd. See the spectacular display of two and half million lights decorating the grounds. Then visit the inside of the mansion for more Christmas decor. You can have a hot beverage and pastry while enjoying live Christmas music. Santa Claus will be there and the gift shop will be open where you can find unique Christmas ornaments and stocking stuffers.

Opening hours are 6 pm to 10 pm. Admission: $5.00-adults, $3.00-children 10 and under.

On the Friday following Thanksgiving the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River celebrates the beginning of the Christmas Season with its Feast of Lights. It begins with a pre-dinner cocktail reception followed by the turning on the 500,000 outdoor light display at 6:30 pm. This is followed by a plated dinner. Dinner service begins at 6:35 pm. Pricing for the dinner depends on the location of your table with the highest price for a window table. Dinner--$80 to $100. The reception is an additional $75. For reservations telephone 800-345-1921.




This is one of the Christmas events with a long tradition in Portland--The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights. The 62-acre National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother is decked out with millions of lights. You can also enjoy indoor music concerts. There will also be hand-puppet shows and a live petting zoo. Be sure to dress warmly. Free parking is available.

This year's festival begins on November 23rd and runs through December 30, 2007.

Entrance fees are: $7-adults, $3-children ages 3-12. Gates are open from 5 pm to 9:30 pm. The grounds close at 10 pm. The Grotto is located at NE 85th and Sandy Blvd., Portland



The kids will love Oregon Zoo Zoolights at the Oregon Zoo and they can even ride the Zoo Train. See dozens of zoo animals done in lights--more than 200 animated animals. Hours are: Sunday through Thursday--5 pm to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday--5pm to 8:30 pm. Admission: $8.50-adult, $7.00-senior, $5.50-children 3 to 11. Train ride is extra ($2.50-$2.00). The entire zoo is not open but some animals will be visible. This is one of the Christmas events that families attend year after year.

The Oregon Zoo is located in Washington Park. Don't forget, you can get there on MAX.


Oregon Christmas Events--Parades



The Macy's Christmas Parade is the day after Thanksgiving, November 23, 2007. This year it will follow a new route. It begins at Lincoln High School and travels north on Southwest 14th Avenue, east on Southwest Alder Street, past the soon-to-be re-opened Downtown Portland store, south on Southwest Second Avenue and west up Taylor Street to an ending point near Lincoln High. The parade begins at 8:45 am.


Oregon Christmas Events--Music



Another Portland traditions is The Singing Christmas Tree. Over 300 singers, a full orchestra, local actors, and soloists join together in a musical celebration of Christmas. It is held at the Keller Auditorium, SW 3rd & Clay, Portland.

The 2007 Christmas Revels: The Ghosts of Haddon Hall celebrates the winter solstice with music, theater, and dance. The ghosts of Haddon Hall is the story of the Duke of Rutland and his family returning to his ancestral home after the hall had been vacant for 200 years.

  • December 8--1 pm and 7:30 pm
  • December 9--1 pm
  • December 13--7:30 pm
  • December 14--7:30 pm
  • December 15--1 pm and 7:30 pm

The Oregon Symphony performs a Gospel Christmas on December 7th, 8th, and 9th at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway, Portland, OR. The concert begins at 7:30 pm.

The Portland Gay Men's Chorus will perform Brass, Bells, and Wassail on December 14th, 15th, and 16th at Kaul Auditorium, Reed College, 3203 SE Woodstock Portland.

On December 15th over 200 tuba players will gather at Pioneer Courthouse Square to play A Tuba Christmas from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Admission is free.



On December 15th the Oregon Symphoney will perform Yuletide Spectacular at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway, Portland, OR. The concert begins at 3:00 pm.
